Top Social Psychology Programs

Ohio State University offers one of the top training programs in Social Psychology internationally. The program is tied for 2nd with Stanford in the US News Graduate School Rankings. In this program, students will receive broad exposure to the theories and methods of social psychology and acquire expertise in one or more specialty areas such as affect, attitude change, social cognition, attribution, automaticity interpersonal processes, and intergroup relations. Students are expected to develop skills in conceptual analysis of social behavior and social problems, research design, scholarly writing, data analysis, teaching, editorial reviewing and oral communication.

Yale is in the top 4 nationally for the specialty. The Social/Personality Psychology program at Yale University has focused on advancing both basic knowledge about intrapersonal and interpersonal processes. The program was concerned primarily with persuasion and attitude change.

UCLA's Psychology Department has developed leading programs in health and political psychology that are well integrated with the social psychology program. The social program also maintains close connections with the Institute for Social Science Research, the International Center for Talent Development, and UCLA's Schools of Education, Public Health, Nursing, etc.

Princeton University is rated 7th nationally for the specialty. The social program provides students with courses and research training across a broad range of areas within social psychology. Upon enrolling the program students become involved in a variety of research projects.

Developmental Psychology Rankings

Yale is placed in the top 3 nationally for the specialty. The Developmental program offers advanced training in understanding children of all ages. Topics of special interest include infancy, adolescence, applications of developmental psychology to education, cognitive development, developmental psychopathology, language and thought, social policy, intelligence, and children in other cultures.

University of Virginia is tied for 4th with UC Berkeley for the specialty. Virginia's graduate students may concentrate their studies in Developmental Psychology or may combine with other areas to meet their specific research interests. The developmental concentration offers a wide variety of research possibilities.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is placed 10th among the best programs offering developmental training. Admission to the graduate programs is highly competitive, only a small proportion of the applicants to a program can be accepted.

The University of Chicago has long been a pioneer in the field of developmental science. It is placed 13th for the specialty. The Developmental Psychology Program provides a rich environment for scientific inquiry, training, and mentorship.

Top Cognitive Psychology Programs

Stanford University is ranked top for cognitive psychology in the US, followed by Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in second place. The Department of Psychology at CMU offers training program leading to the Ph.D. degree. The faculty include many of the leading researchers in cognitive psychology, cognitive neuroscience, developmental psychology, and social-personality psychology. The graduate program in cognitive psychology involves the analysis of the functional and neural mechanisms underlying cognition using a variety of methodologies, populations and computational formalisms.

University of Illinois--Urbana-Champaign is rated 7th nationally for the specialty. Members of the Cognitive Division have research programs focused on human memory, cognitive aging, categorization, language processing, reasoning, and computational modeling.

Yale is rated 8th nationally for the specialty. The program in Cognitive Psychology is concerned with research in perception, human learning and memory, thinking and problem solving, consciousness, language, and intelligence, as well as with applications of this basic research to everyday settings.

Northwestern University is placed 15th for the specialty. The major purpose of the graduate training program in Cognitive Psychology in the Department of Psychology at Northwestern is to train skilled research professionals and teachers.

A graduate degree in Clinical Psychology can lead to a career in social work, sociology, mental health, or counseling. Three universities are ranked joint top in the US for theirclinical psychology programs, according to the US News rankings, with the other two leading universities (UC Berkeley and U of Minnesota Twin Cities) made up the rest of the top 5.

The Department of Psychology at University of York (UK) is placed firmly in the top 10 in the UK for psychology in three University Guides for 2011: ranked 7th in The Independent, 7th in The Guardian University Guide, and 5th in The Times newspapers. A total of 95% of its research activity was judged to be of international quality, placing the Department in the top 10 of the 76 Psychology departments entered into the RAE. It has also received top marks (24/24) for teaching quality in the Subject Review carried out by the Quality Assurance Agency.

The Department of Psychology at Royal Holloway (University of London) was ranked 7th (out of 75) amongst the very best Departments in the RAE 2008 according to the ranking compiled by the Guardian and Times.
